Findspot record TR 05 SE 152 - Early medieval strap fitting and weight, Godmersham

Summary

An early medieval strapend and rectangular bronze block with iron strips were found by a metal detectorist near Godmersham in September 1994. The strapend, also possibly a pointer, was c.45mm long and in the shape of a snake head and body, with a design in bronze with silver rings. The bronze block was c.30mm long and has a cross hatched decoration and a loop at one end. This has been identified as a possible weight. Photographs of these artefacts are located in Maidstone Museum but the current location of the finds themselves is uncertain

Full Description

Two metal detector finds from nr Bilting Grange Farm, September 1994. 1. Strapend (or possibly pointer) c45mm long of snake head and body design in bronze with silver rings, fd at TR 0615 5050. 2. Rectangualer block bronze and iron strips c30mm long with cross hatched decoration and a loop at one end. Suggested as a weight, found at TR 0660 5052. Photographs in Maidstone Museum.
