The Brewery was established prior to 1859, probably by G.Wall. By 1881 it was mainly brewing for export and it was owned by Johnson & Co Ltd. In 1898 it was acquired by Wilson & Towgood, who changed its name to Canterbury Brewery CO. Fremlins acquired it in 1923(1). It seems that it was demolished by the 1960's, probably soon after the merger.

The Canterbury Urban Archaeological Database states that The Northgate Brewery with maltings was established in 1854 with a retail branch at 46 St. George's Street; by G. Wall and was later owned by C. Goodwin from 1862. The Brewery site appears on the 1st edition O. S. map of 1874.

By 1878 it was mainly brewing for export and was owned by Johnson & Co. Ltd (Canterbury Directory 1878 and Steven's Directory 1882). In 1898 it was acquired by Wilson & Towgood, who changed its name to the Canterbury Brewery Co. A Guide of 1903 shows an advertisement for the Canterbury Brewery confirming is establishment in 1854 with brewery and offices in Northgate and a retail branch at 46 St. George's Street. It had won five international awards for its Pale and Mild Ales, Stout and Porter.

Fremlins acquired it in 1923 and brewing ceased soon after. The brewery may have been demolished soon after the merger. The site now (2002) houses ATS Tyre Services, and the street address has changed from Northgate Street to Sturry Road.
