Full Description
A single kiln was situated in the uphill end of an elongated pit cut into the hillside between Fisher Street Farm and Fridhill Wood, near Sheldwich. The pit remains.
The chalk pit is not shown on the 1842 Tithe Map of Sheldwich. It first appears on the 1st edition OS 25" map. It is marked as "Old Chalk Pit" by the time of the 2nd edition OS 25" map, though a second kiln had been added between the two maps.
In 2008 a lime kiln was emptied. The associated chalk caves were surveyed by the Kent Underground Research Group in 2009. The kiln was surveyed by the Maidstone Area Archaeological Group in 2013. (1,2)
