Full Description

Former site of a Brewery on Biggin Street, Dover; originally Poulter’s Castle Brewery. It noted in Pigot’s directory of 1832 and 1839 as being owned by James Poulter of Biggin Street. It seems that the business expanded as a further brewery belonging to James Poulter on Russell Street is noted in a directory dating to 1847. (1) By 1874 the brewery was run by T. Huntley and in the 1880's it was acquired by J.J. Allen, when Huntley moved to another site.(2) The Leney’s, who owned the Phoenix Brewery in Dover, acquired the Poulter’s Castle Brewery along with numerous other premises in Dover in the early years of the 20th century (3). The site has now been cleared.
