Full Description
A single Kiln situated between washbacks of a brickfield but marked as 'old' and presumably not operating at the same time, in 1908.(1) The site has now been redeveloped as a Caravan Park.
The earthworks of a large 20th century clay pit can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The clay pit is centred on TQ 7841 7144 and was connected via a tramway to brickworks to the south (NMR 1545288), an area now occupied by Hoo Marina Park. This clay pit is first depicted on the Ordnance Survey in 1909 and had been further enlarged by 1947. It appears to have been abandoned by 1947 and the interior was brought into arable cultivation by 1950. Hoo Marina Park encroaches upon the southern part of this feature. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(2-4)
