Monument record TQ 77 SE 157 - Site of the former Hoo St. Werburgh brickworks, Hoo Marina, Hoo St. Werburgh

Summary

The earthworks of a large 20th century clay pit can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The clay pit was connected via a tramway to the brickworks to the south (NMR 1545288), an area now occupied by Hoo Marina Park. This clay pit is first depicted on the Ordnance Survey in 1909 and had been further enlarged by 1947. It appears to have been abandoned by 1947 and the interior was brought into arable cultivation by 1950. Hoo Marina Park encroaches upon the southern part of this feature. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
