Summary

A tunnel leading down to the beach starting at East Cliff Caves in the King George VI Memorial Park, Ramsgate. It was used during the Napoleonic Wars and was excavated for the Commander of the Channel Squadron, Admiral Lord George Keith, so that he could have speedy access to his fleet. The tunnel entrance has been subsequently used as a tea gardens but is now disused.

Full Description

East Cliff Caves at the King George VI Memorial Park, Ramsgate. The site was used during the Napoleonic Wars link the top of the cliffs to the beach. It was 500 yards in length and excavated for the Commander of the Channel Squadron, Admiral Lord George Keith, so that he could have speedy access to his fleet. After the wars the tunnel was used as tea gardens and has since run in to disuse. There are eight openings to the caves which was probably earlier nine.(1)
