Full Description
WJ Mackey established the Kent Cattle Food and Spice Company at New Brompton in the later 19th century before he founded his Maidstone works. The mills produced a range of compounded cattle cakes as well as cattle spice and fattening meals. The mill consisted of double fronted 3 storey building with an engine hse and chimney to the rear. A Fire in October 1895 partly destroyed the mills and Mackey relocated to Maidstone shortly afterwards.(1) The mill had been a steam powered corn mill in 1868. A wild mill was adjacent to the mill, with a second just to the west, one of which may be that known as New Brompton Windmill that may also have operated as a seed mill.(2)
