Monument record TQ 76 SW 78 - Wouldham cement works

Summary

It is possible that a small cement works was in operation in Wouldham as early as 1855 run by Robinson and Gaskell. In the 1880s the Gaskell brothers set up the Wouldham Cement works which later became part of APCM under the name of Wouldham (Medway) cement works. It closed in 1902. The works seem to have consisted of two long parallel bulidings at right angles to the river. By the time it closed down it had expanded to include other buildings closer to the waterfont. A tramway ran to the pits and wash backs existed behind the works and possibly to the south. The site has now been cleared.
