Monument record TQ 77 SE 223 - Upnor cement works, Lower Upnor, Hoo St. Werburgh

Summary

The cement works at Upnor was one of a number of such works in Frindsbury in the 19th century and early 20th century. This works was in operation between 1858 and 1902 and it was situated on the bank of the Medway at Lower Upnor. Marked as Portland Cement Works, it is depicted along with its associated clay pits on the 1896 Ordnance Survey map. Although the buildings were demolished after closure the remains of some of these and the overgrown clay pits can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1950. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

Cement works established in 1858 by CJ Hilton and closed soon after 1900. It subsequently became a boat yard. (1) No visible remains in 2004, point in the middle of a car park (10)

The cement works at Upnor was one of a number of such works in Frindsbury in the 19th century and early 20th century. This works was in operation between 1858 and 1902 and it was situated on the bank of the Medway at Lower Upnor, centred on TQ 7626 7128. Marked as Portland Cement Works, it is depicted along with its associated clay pits on the 1896 Ordnance Survey map. Although the buildings were demolished after closure the remains of some of these and the overgrown clay pits can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1950. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
