Monument record TQ 86 NW 209 - Site of Sharpe's Green Cement works, Horrid Hill, Gillingham

Summary

The Sharpe's Green Cement Works was established by Cary and Bernard before 1908. It utilised Horrid Hill, an island connected by a causeway from the shore near Rainham. This causeway was built up to allow chalk to be brought via rail from the works' put on the shore. The works became part of the British Portland Cement Manufacturers in 1911 and was closed two years later. Late 19th century cement works on Horridhill, an island in the Medway linked to the mainland by a causeway which carried a tramway to transport stone from a quarry at TQ805677. The main part of the works has been demolished although many of the structures survive as brick and concrete foundations. There is a purpose-built wharf for cement barges on the east side of the island. The wharf is of brick and concrete construction and survives to 1.5m high with two large docking recesses. The tramway leading from the quarry to the island has been destroyed on the island and causeway, but can be seen to the south of the B2004 road.

Full Description

The works was established by Cary and Bernard before 1908, utilising Horrid Hill, an island connected by a causeway from the shore near Rainham. (1) The causeway was built up to allow locomotion to bring chalk from the works' put on the shore. The works became part of the British Portland Cement Manufacturers in 1911 and was closed two years later. (2) The wharf on Horrid Hill was constructed prior to the works and a causeway linked to it to the mainland. Site photographs (3-6).
