Full Description

The admiralty appointed Simon Goodrich, an engineer, to construct a kiln and horse drawn grinding mill at Sheerness Dockyard in 1810, A steam engine later replaced the horse. In 1812 construction was carried out at the dockyard with James Grellier in control. He also seems to have been running the cement works. After 1815 crushing rollers were added to prepare the cement stones. It is uncertain when the works were closed but Grellier had ceased trading by the 1840s (1). Site photographs (2-5).
