Full Description

A zig-zag flight of steps and path cut into the cliff face at Langdon Hole comprising of three zigs and three zags of c.30m long. Langdon Hole is a small bay in the White Cliffs immmediately east of the eastern arm of Dover harbour. This was probably an ancient smuggling route which was subsequently guarded by the Preventative Station on Cornhill, overlooking Langdon Hole. The route was probably influential in the siting of the Langdon Battery Searchlights in 1898-1909 which are also reached by the stairs. The steps were protected in the 1914-18 war by 'Flame Fougasses' - drums of inflammable liquid buried at the angles to the path. Metal handrails protect the length of the path which is in places severaly eroded. The remains of cables and wires leading to the searchlights can also be seen as well as a shank of part of a pulley system (1)
