Five large fuel oil reservoirs were tunnelled into the chalk in a line up in the cliff with two long tunnels running down to the Eastern Dock level. The eastern of these carried the two large oil pipes down and along the Eastern Arm of the harbour. These were in use until after WW2. During the war leaked fuel oil found its' way through the chalk and caused oil to form in the Camber. It is understood that a fire resulting from this sprawled the blockwork at the junction of the eastern arm and the Camber wall. The tunnels are accessed by a gated door from the Eastern Arm . Built to store fueld for the Naval ships docked in the Camber. The five parallel ranks of fuel tanks stretch northwards to a position under the bungalow of Langdon Battery.(1)
