Full Description

A deep pit dug during road works on the NE side of the Woolcomber-Townwall Street junction revealed a complete section through a complex sequence of Medieval deposits. These consisted of alternate layers of chalk rubble, soil and occupation deposits. Several of the occupation layers produced pottery dating from the late 11th to 13th centuries. The lowest layers rested on deposits of sandy beach shingle, the surface of which was at +4.64m OD.(1-2)
