Full Description
Extensive ridge and furrow and associated earthworks are clearly visible in the fields north of Wickens House, Charing. The earthworks run from north-west to south-east from the Upper Orchard into Kitchen Meadow and from south-west to north-east into the west end of Kitchen Meadow. There are also earthworks which appear to derive from streams running north-south through Kitchen Meadow and a raised platform which may represent the upcast from the construction of the pond immediately west of the house. In 1998 the fields were threatened with ploughing. Prior to this they had been under pasture since c.1780. The earthworks clearly predate the Upper Orchard which was present in c.1780 and may be contemporary with the rebuilding of Wickens House in c.1590.
