Full Description

A baptist burial ground lies on Darns Hill c.150m south west of Crockenhill. The burial ground was in use by the early 18th century - the earliest surviving gravestone is that of a member of the Cox family which dates to 1706. The Cox family seem to have been influential non-conformists since the later 17th century as the name of a John Cox appears as one of the founders of the Bessels Green Church in 1667. By 1738 Bessels Green had its own burial ground and the Crockenhill burial ground seems to have been used by local baptists only. By 1802 the burial ground was also being used by Eynsford Baptists. The last recorded burial was in 1948. Burial grounds which are not adjacent to chapels seem to be rare, Christopher Stell of English Heritage, an expert in the field of non-conformist burial grounds, knew of only one such burial ground in Devon (1).
