Founded in 1866 as a cottage hospital, this sprawling small general hospital still contains in its midst the building erected in 1872 to the design of John M. Hooker. This was remodelled in 1920-21 to plans drawn up by William Pite before the outbreak of the First World War. A great many additions and alterations were made subsequently, completely obscuring the original building. In 1933 a nurses' home opened on a nearby site. The hospital was transferred to the NHS in 1948 and remains in use as a general hospital.(1)
