Summary

The large Kent and Sussex general hospital in Tunbridge Wells was built in 1932-34 to replace earlier general and eye hospitals. The original construction comprised a main block, a casualty ward, as well as out-patients' and other departments, and two ward wings. A seperate nurse' home was attached to the main buildings by a bridge and stepped covered way.

Full Description

A large general hospital , built on the outskirts of town in 1932-34 to replace eariler general and eye hospitals. Designed by Cecil Burns FRIBA, and constructed by John Jarvis, a local contractor, the new hospital comprised a main block, for administration, casualty, out-patients' and other departemnts, with two long ward wings stretching southwards from either end. A seperate nurse' home was attached to the main buildings by a bridge and stepped covered way. All the buildings were of reinforced concrete construction, with brick in filling, the layers of horizontal contrete memebrs forming the elevations. The most stricking features of the design were the south-facing covered sun balconies at the ends of the wards, each connecting with the others by spiral reinforced concrete ramps, supported by cantilevers(1)
