Full Description

A pillbox built as part of the nodal point ,or 'anti-tank' island, formed during 1940-41 at the junction between the Newhaven-Hoo stop-line and the GHQ Line 'B' stop-line along the left bank of the Medway (1-2)

Additional Information (3)

Anti-tank gun emplacement combined with infantry pillbox. A concrete interior wall divides the emplacement. [An attempt made some years ago to blow it up, but with no success: however, there is external damage around an embrasure]. Recorder Farthing records a detached holdfast mounting at NGR - TQ 547454, which may be associated with this emplacement (2 photographs DIGITISED). Recorder Urquhart gives NGR - TQ 550455]. Type 28A anti-tank gun emplacement, with holdfast mounting. Field of fire E towards Ensfield Bridge road/river crossing. Bad damage to one LMG embrasure. Brick-shuttered.Type 28a anti-tank gun emplacement (for 6pdr. Hotchkiss gun). Circular concrete plinth at TQ 54724541, with nine bolts and nuts. Sited within ten feet of small drain close to River Medway. NNW of Ensfield Bridge, in field on E side of road from Ensfield railway station. (3-4)
