Monument record TQ 94 NW 43 - Romano-British trackway, east of Newlands

Summary

A possible Romano-British trackway, 4.85m wide and 0.88m deep was found during archaeological investigations in an area to the east of Newlands. This feature was aligned north west to south east, and two different fills were idnetified within it; only the upper fill produced dateable finds, 21 sherds of late Iron Age/early Romano-British pottery (c. 100BC - 200AD). It is thought that the artefactual and organic material recovered from the trackway may comprise residual material from a nearby settlement, rather than neccessarily reflecting the lifetime of the track: this evidence does however show that the track fell out of use some time after 200 AD.
