Full Description
An evaluation was carried out in 1997 prior to CTRL works near Harrietsham. 16 1-metre square test pits were hand excavated to determine the location, extent and composition of any mesolithic lithic concentrations. The test pits didn't produce the quantity of mesolithic flints consistent with earlier flint scatters. The bulk of the 194 flints appear to be of Neolithic date, much of it probably Later Neolithic. A single Bronze Age pottery sherd occurred in an earlier ploughsoil. The results have demonstrated that only a small amount of flint recovered is due to Mesolithic activity. The Neolithic flint did not occur in significant concentrations and produced few tools and no complete cores. All the flints were recovered from the topsoil/ploughsoils and colluvium and no in situ deposits were identified(1).
