Full Description
The paddock lies c. 100m north of Walmer Castle and is in the care of English Heritage. Since it proved impractical (on engineering grounds) to avoid this location for siting a buried attenuation tank and pipeline, a phased evaluation was carried out in 1993-4 comprising an earthwork survey followed by trial trenching. The most notable archaeological feature recorded was a Late Neolithic or Bronze Age ring-ditch. Overall diameter was estimated at approximately 25m, between 1.5 and 2.0m wide and between 0.65 and 0.75m deep. Two small adjacent pits were recorded within the ring-ditch. These features may concievably represent the remains of a Bronze Age barrow containing residual Neolithic sherds.
Approximately 15m north of the ring ditch two Romano-British pits were located but the evidence for Romano-British activity in the paddock is very slight and the foci of such activity undoubtedly lay beyond the extent of the excavation area(1).
