Full Description
During an Archaeological watching brief undertaken in Dover’s western docks on Elizabeth Street and Hawkesbury Street, by Wessex archaeology in association with the Dover and Folkestone Waste Water Treatment Scheme, revealed substantial evidence for the occupation of this area in the post medieval period. The majority of the remains were 19th century foundations and cellaring, and generally extended 2.4m below the modern ground level. A few pre 19th century deposits were also recorded including possible 18th century levels below cellaring and possible 16th/17th century bricks recovered on Elizabeth Street. These remains would have once formed part of Dover’s historic pier district which was largely demolished in the first half of the 20th century. (1).
