Full Description
The evaluation revealed evidence of occupation of Late Iron Age date, presently estimated at c. 50BC - 40AD, comprising two large field boundary ditches and two smaller intercutting gullies. These were covered by a layer of dumped material of the same date, and the whole was overlain by an indeterminate medieval feature, possibly a pond.
About two dozen sherds of late Iron Age pottery were recovered. These and the density of features uncovered indicates the presence of a large area of settlement, probably a farmstead, which is likely to extent some hundreds of meters in any direction. No pottery of Roman date was recovered, which suggests the settlement was either abandoned or relocated after the Roman conquest of 43 AD.
No evidence of buildings associated with the medieval priory was found. The putative pond was filled with medieval roofing tile, perhaps to be associated with the demolition of the buildings in the mid sixteenth century.
