Full Description
In 1998 a watching brief carried out by Archaeology South-East on topsoil stripping for gravel extraction at Lydd 9, Lydd Quarry found an arrangement of 17 timber uprights in five discrete groups. These posts perhaps represent the northern extent of two parallel rows of piers that may have supported a c.2m wide deck, possibly a causeway across a channel towards a gravel outcrop c.40m to the south. It could also have provided access to a mussel bed. Late Iron Age pottery was found in an associated context. (1)
