Full Description

The evaluation was carried out in June 1998 prior to development at the rear of 25 Cattle Market, Sandwich. Only two features of interest were observed, the first is a wall foundation with extant first course of bricks of early 18th century manufacture. In the south-west corner of the plot a section of wall in the same brick has survived and been incorporated as part of an early 19th century house. The second feature is a foundation of chalk rubble about 1.5m wide. Showing in section above this was a truncated section of robber trench, just above which was a glazed sherd from a large crock dateable to 1600-1650. It is possible that this second feature is a part of a medieval building, perhaps St. Thomas' Hospital(1).
