Full Description
Air raid shelter discovered by building contractors undertaking work for school extension. The shelter is typical of many built during the war for communal protection. It is a single corridor type on an L-shaped plan. There is one staircase entrance at the apex of the angle formed by the L, with two vertical escape hatches at either extremity of the corridor. At the foot of the entrance staircase is a single toilet chamber. The shelter could take approximately 100 teachers and children. In the event of a gas attack the main entrance had a primative form of airlock, now largely rotted away.(1)
