Full Description
A study of the historic development of the old Post Office on Biggin Street was undertaken ahead of its demolition in 1999. The structural evidence confirms that the entire of Biggin Street façade and most of the priory Street elevation date to the first period of construction of this complex. C. 1912-1913. To the rear of the Biggin Street Façade was a sorting shed which extended also to the rear of the adjacent property no 67. The shed presented a double gable to an open yard which occupied the remainder of the site to Priory Road. A few extensions were carried out to some of the sheds associated with the Post Office in 1937. This provided shelter within the yard area to the rear which had previously been open. With the exception of inserted decorative schemes and the replacement of the Post Office counter in the 1960’s and 1970’s there appears to have been no further alterations of any great significance. The building essentially retained its 1914 and 1937 character. (1) Site now redeveloped and building demolished (1).
