Full Description

The paddock lies c. 100m north of Walmer Castle and is in the care of English Heritage. There were indications that a trench or covered way, part of the Tudor defensive line of Sandown, Deal and Walmer Castles, might be preserved within the paddock. Since it proved impractical (on engineering grounds) to avoid this location for siting a buried attenuation tank and pipeline, a phased evaluation was carried out in 1993-4 comprising an earthwork survey followed by trial trenching. Some earthworks were associated with the late 18th/19th century landscaping by William Pitt the Younger and the Second Earl Granville - Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1792-1806 and 1865-91 respectively). Earthworks which predated the landscaping were also recorded, consisting of a low bank in the south-east corner of the paddock and two parallel banks towards the northern boundary. These features were interpreted as possible elements of the tudor defensive earthworks constructed in 1539-40(1).
