Full Description
In March 2000 the nineteenth century, four-storey brick building occupying the eastern corner of the junction between Bench Street and Townwall Street, Dover (No 12 Bench Street), was demolished. A site visit by Canterbury Archaeological Trust showed that the whole site was occupied by a 2.60m deep cellar. Examination of the cellar walls revealed that sections of earlier walling had been incorporated into the Victorian structure. These earlier walls seem to have belonged to previous Medieval and post-medieval cellared buildings that once occupied the same site. The eastern wall was found to consist almost entirely of ancient walling and two phases of work were readily apparent here. The northern 5.3m of the wall consisted of roughly coursed greensand rubble with occasional flints set in a hard gritty mortar. The southern end had been cut away and replaced by a later wall. (1)
