Full Description

Prior to the construction of a car park at Broadlees Bottom, an evaluation was undertaken in December 1998 by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. This evaluation found a substantial ditch which had been re-cut several times and dated from the medieval period. This ditch may have originally marked the boundary of the castle grounds during the time it was in use or it may have been intended to take rain water cominf down the slope. It was traced for a minimum distance of 1.6m and was 1.3m deep. The filling of the ditch was mostly devoid of finds but three sherds of sandy late Medieval pottery were recovered from the middle filling. (1)
