Full Description
A large oval pit cutting into the top of the clean natural sands is evidence for Medieval activity at the site. The full dimantions of the feature could not be ascertained though it was recorded as being over 1.6m east-west by 1.95m north-south. An abundance of pottery (82 sherds c. AD1225-1250-75) animal bone, shell, carbon flecking and roof slate was present within the fill. The layers of cess encountered in this feature during hand digging suggest a cess pit or a pit for rubbish disposal.A feature like this is usually located close to significant occupation or buildings suggesting the site of a stucture of a similar date nearby. The pit would appear to date to the mid-late 13th century. (1)
