Monument record TR 13 NE 90 - Shornecliffe Redoubt

Summary

The redoubt originated as an element of the anti-invasion defences established along the south coast during the Napoleonic Wars. It was built on the commanding Shornecliffe Heights, close to Shornecliffe infantry camp. It is slightly to the rear of a line of Martello Towers along the ridge and above Shornecliffe Battery. In 1870 the redoubt was described as "an unfinished square redoubt of about 100 yards side" with its west face having "a good command over the Royal Military Canal, and the ground in front and rear of it.
