Full Description
A series of cultivation terraces have been observed within Old Park Wood, Whitfield. In the south-western half of the wood, the north-west and south-east margins were found to be delimited by steep banks. These are probably wood banks associated with the plantation itself, but two other, less sharply defined terraces following the hillside located wihtin the wood seem to predate the woodland. Although largely obscured by woodland and scrub, further faint traces of cultivation terraces following the contours were located on the slopes of Old Park Hill, over-looking the main Dour valley. These were contained within two shallow coombes separated by a slight spur above Friars Way and are clearly visible on air photographs. Two or three separate terraces appeared to be contained within each coombe.
It now seems clear that the hill slopes on the western and southern sides of the former Old Park Estate are occupied by abandoned cultivation terraces. These could represent medieval strip-lynchets, although the presence of prehistoric struck flint artefacts as surface finds across the features might suggest an earlier origin for at least some. (1)
