Full Description
In August 2001 an archaeological watching brief was carried out by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust behind the Old Customs House, Upper Strand Street, Sandwich during the construction of a small extension.
The full thickness of the archaeological deposits here was not revealed but from the available evidence it would appear that two successive early post-medieval buildings had formerly occupied the area. The earliest structure was set on a shallow terrace cut into the natural slope of the ground. The later building seems to have been abandoned sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century, following which it became buried by soil.
The watching brief also recovered sherds of late 13th/early 14th century pottery (see TR 35 NW 241) (1)
