Full Description
The remains of a building in the form of laminated clay floors and occupation depositys was revealed in the south east side of a excavations carried out by CAT at Prospect Place, New Romney, in 2001. the layers were revealed twoards the base of the foundation trenches being excavated and were mainly left in tact. The earliest deposit in the sequence was a 4-6cm thick deposit of silty clay which was laid directly on top of the clean yellow sand. This was seen to extend for over 7.85m north east by south west and 3.7m north west from the main site section. The remains of an occupation layer partially sealed this deposit. This contained a quantity of butchered animal bone, carbon/charcoal flecks and pottery sherds. Another clay floor sealed this deposit in the centre of which was a circular burnt clay pad. These features may reporesent a timber framed building, a series of circular pits and ditches and an oven may also relqate to these floors. (1)
