Full Description

Single inhumation found during a watching brief by Gifford & Partners at the Church of Saint Edmund & Martyr, West Kingsdown, Kent, between 29th May & 6th June 2001. The inhumation had survived in its entirety although preservation of the actual human remains was poor. Due to the state of the bones gender deturmination was uncertain, as was estimation of stature. However, it was possible to age the individual between 25 and 30 years at time of death. A variety of coffin fittings were recovered including nails, handles, an indecipherable lid plate, and studs, some of which faced inwards and were lacquered suggesting an upholstered coffin. The grave cut was oriented West (head) to East (feet) and was 1.47m below present surface level. (1)
