Full Description

Area of archaeological activity found during building work for extension of St. Mary's Primary School. The evidence is part of a larger archaeological complex the extent of which is unknown. Two terraces which are likely to be contemporary with a ditch also located within the trench but could be of either prehistoric or Medieval date.(1)

The two shallow parallel terrace cuts were located on the downhill south western side of the ditch running on a slightly different axis. Their upper edges were 2.6m apart. The upper terrace cut was traced for a distance of 9.4m. It was 0.23m deep and was filled by some light brown clay loam with chalk flint and charcoal specks, devoid of any finds. The lower terrace cut was traced for a distance of 7.45m and was 0.05m deep and was again filled with light orange-brown clay loam with chalk, flint and charcoal specks. This produced a single unworked prehistoric struck flint. (2)
