Full Description
In 1998 during a watching brief on work for the Folkestone Wastewater Scheme several sections of timber piled and planked revetment, probably a timber lined quayside were found. All the timber piles were of oak and had been attatched to the planked reveting by wooden pegs. A number of the timber piles had carpenter's marks. These sections probably represent the western side of the early post-medieval harbour. Radiocarbon dating put the date of timber felling to about 1625 - 1655 AD. The silt deposits formed against the face of the timber revetment contained pottery and clay pipe bowls dated to around 1660 - 1700. The landward side of the revetment was infilled with compacted shingle and sand. The site was later abandoned, due to silting, and covered by a succession of 18th and 19th century buildings.(1)
