Monument record TR 23 NW 214 - Medieval Masonary Wall

Summary

In 1998 during a watching brief on work for the Folkestone Wastewater Scheme a wall constructed from large squared greensand blocks in clay bonding was recorded for a length of 3.5m. The wall appears to have been built on stone piles. A single sherd of pottery found suggests a construction date of c.1075 - 1150 AD. The structure appears to have gon out of use by the late 18th or early 19th century when a box drain was cut through it. This wal possibly formed part of the early medieval harbour.
