Summary

In 1987 an excavation exposed remains of a medieval two bay undercroft under 34-36 High Street. It included a semi-circular respond and three splayed ribs. The wall was built of stone, flint and fragments of Roman tile. Early in the 18th century the undercroft was partitioned by a stone wall. The internal dimensions of this undercroft are approximately 8.52m x 4.55m. Excavation in the cellar of No.34 disclosed natural brickearth along side the medieval wall indicating an open space or alley on the bridge side of the building.
