Monument record TQ 76 NW 342 - Medieval Undercroft under 36 High Street, Rochester

Summary

In 1987 an excavation exposed remains of a medieval two bay undercroft under 34-36 High Street. It included a semi-circular respond and three splayed ribs. The wall was built of stone, flint and fragments of Roman tile. Early in the 18th century the undercroft was partitioned by a stone wall. The internal dimensions of this undercroft are approximately 8.52m x 4.55m. Excavation in the cellar of No.34 disclosed natural brickearth along side the medieval wall indicating an open space or alley on the bridge side of the building.

Full Description

In 1987 an excavation exposed remains of a medieval two bay undercroft under 34-36 High St (H.J Cobbs Tailor) an 18th century red bricj building. The respond had been excavated 10 years earlier by Mr D. Williams. The stone respond stands to a height of 1.73m and set in the SE wall of the undercroft. It is of semi-circular form, with curved annular decoration on the capital. At a height of .94m the respond splays to support 3 ribs which woul have vaulted over at this point. The wall is built of stone, flint and fragments of Roman tile. Early in the 18th century the undercroft was partitioned by a stone wall. The internal dimensions of this undercroft are approximately 8.52m x 4.55m.

Excavation in the cellar of No.34 disclosed natural brickeart along side the medieval n-w wall indicating an open space or alley on the bridge side of the building. The medieval builders cut through the cobbled lane which ran at right-angles to the High St (See TQ 76 NW 111) (1,2)
