Monument record TQ 72 NE 176 - Site of a 16th century beacon, near Hawkhurst

Summary

A beacon was formerly located near Hawkhurst. This monument is shown on Lambarde's 'Carde' of c.1570. A possible indication of the site of this beacon may be suggested by a field name, 'The Beacon' or 'Danes Beacon' lying a mile to the east of Hawkhurst upon the top of a ridge. In total c.56 beacons were recorded across Kent on Lambarde's 'Carde' but rarely does any evidence of these structures remain. No further information was avialable.
