Monument record TR 15 NW 655 - Roman Building in Canterbury
Summary
During trenching on former allotment gardens, evidence of a Roman Street (TR 15 NW 601) and building was recovered. The building, which bounded the road to the west, had a central courtyard with portico's constructed on a raised platform. The potico's floor, designed to overcome damp conditions, had a base of broken tiles which supported a bed of opus signinum overlain by mortar. To the west lay a clay-floored room with a beam scar marking its further wall. Two post-holes were found in the room, possibly from the original scaffolding. West of the room was a roughly metalled courtyard. An open hearth lay nearby. Beyond the courtyard lay another portico or corridor with a mortered floor.
In the late Roman period the building was demolished, possibly due to a rising water table, and all the posts and beams had been taken up and almost all of the building materials removed. After this a possible gully was cut in the Roman period but no further activity seems to have taken place on the site.
