Monument record TR 15 NW 603 - Wall in Canterbury near the Great Stour

Summary

In 1992 two trenches were dug across the projected line of the Canterbury Cioty wall by the Great Stour. One whichcut the river bankc produced evidence of a rough wall about 4.3m long rougly parallel to the river and terminating in two walls running westwards. The northern wall was of roughly coursed mortared flint and the others of roughly coursed flint and brick rubble. A few large tumbled blocks apparently of greensand or rag were seen beneath the water. No dating evidence was recovered form the trench. THe walls found could not be identifed with the city walls shown on early maps and perhaps are embankment walls associated with the early Tannery.
