Monument record TR 23 NW 227 - Remains of Pent Bridge, Folkestone
Summary
On the west side of the junction of the Old High St and Tontine Street, the remains of a stone built structure was revealed during a watching brief. Due to the the size of the trenches dug for services no detailed measurements were made. The structure was constructed of mortared ragstone lumps, running on a s-w by n-e axis across the line of the former Pent Stream. The remains of a wedge-shaped stone voussoir, part of an arch, was found in-situ within the roadway close to the kerb. The structure was seen for a length of 7m and at its western side, under the footpath, a ragstone built wall was seen abutting it. The structure seen seems to represent the west face of a stone built arched bridge across the Pent Stream and therefore the remains of the medieval Pent Bridge.
