Monument record TR 23 NW 229 - The Watch House (Site of), Folkestone

Summary

Some time before 1782, shown on John Powell's map, a Watch House was built on a stone mole (TR 23 NW 228) in Folkestone harbour. Evidence of this building was found during a watching brief in 2000, when trenching revealed two short lengths of walling, one to the south anf the other east, representing two sides of a structure. No evidence of flooring was found. The building is believed to have been a small timber-framed structure built on dwarf ragstone walls. In 1982 it was the property of Reginald Marsh, but may well have been demolished by the mid 19th century when the area was redeveloped.
