Full Description
With the build up of beach deposits and housing developments on the reclaimed land a substantial stone retaining wall was built around this housing area. The wall ran from the west face of a stone mole (TR 23 NE 228) around the angle of the plot then west to the area later known as Kings Bridge Street. The wall, from evidence found during a watching brief in 2000, seems to have been constructed from rough ragstone blocks with a rough ragstone core. It was traced for a minimum of 11m and was 1.2m wide. It's remains were at least 1.2m deep though almost certainly deeper. This reclaimed plot is clearly shown on Powell's map of 1782. The wall was eventually replaced by the construction of the Inner Harbour Wall in the 19th century. (1)
