Summary

The site of an Augustinian Priory of St. Mary Magdalene, originally founded as an Abbey. It was originally founded in the late 12th century during the reign of Henry II It became a priory in c.1220. Dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII in 1536 and no trace remains. No remains have ever been found at the site.

Full Description

[TQ 70603332] Site of St. Mary's Priory [NR] (Augustinian) (1) No trace remains of the Augustinian Priory of St. Mary Magdalen, Combwell. Founded as an Abbey temp. Henry II, it became a Priory c.1220 and was dissolved in 1536. (2-4) Mr. Roberts, the owner of Combwell, states that to his knowledge no remains of the Priory have ever been found at the site. (5)

Selected Heritage Inventory for Natural England: COMBWELL PRIORY. No trace of the Abbey remains. Undated wall on site of priory. Two kilns, also undated, but assumed to be connected to the priory due to their location.
