Monument record TQ 73 SW 4 - Homestead Moat, Furnace Farm, Cranbrook

Summary

The remains of a homestead moat are located at Furnace Farm, Cranbrook. The moat has become partially infilled but is also known to be seasonally waterlogged. It remains in relatively good condition, but has been damaged over the years by the construction of Furnace Farm and also an access road. Traces of the former inlet channel are visible on aerial photographs together with an outlet channel designed to return water to an adjacent stream. No traces of any buildings have been identified within the moat but it is thought that they must exist beneath the present ground surface of the central island. Scheduled as an ancient monument.
