Monument record TR 15 NW 606 - Medieval Walk-Way, Pound Lane Car Park, Canterbury

Summary

During evaluation a well preserved woden hurdle was found flat on a surface of peat, 0.40- 0.50m wide, aligned WSW by ENE roughly parallel to the present St. Peter's Lane. It is probable that the hurdle was laid deliberately to form a walk-way across wet peat. Sherds from a large 12th century pot were found on the surface of the hurdle. The hurdle was left in situ and reburied. The water-logged peat had clearly formed well defined surface: in the centralpart of the evaluatio trench a row of 2o pointed wooden stakes running roughly east-west were found representing the base of an old fence line, possibly representing some kind of compound maybe for animals. There is no clear identification fo the age of this line of stakes.
